M41 Little Beehive cluster

This is M41, the Little Beehive open cluster, in the constellation of Canis Major. It is very close in the sky to Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.

Taken at him in light-polluted inner-city Brisbane. Quite pleased with how well it turned out.

  1. nice photo. i just got done looking at this a few moments ago. what equipment do you use (scope, imager, etc) and what kind of exposure? post-processing (stacking images?) and do you use an autoguider?

    1. G'day gman,

I'm so sorry! I rarely monitor this blog these days, and only just noticed your comment awaiting moderation/reply.

From memory, this would have been shot with my old SkyWatcher ED80, imaging camera would be QSI583ws. Exposure something like 5x60s each channel LRGB. Pretty short exposures really - these days I'd probably be doing something like 10 or 20 subs at 4min or 8 mins each.

Post-processing would have been using PixInsight.

Always use autoguider - I have an Orion finder-guider and QHY5 guide camera.
